The first thing you need
to do before digging or boring into the ground is to make sure that
you are not going to kill yourself by hitting power or gas lines or
cutting water mains, cable and telecommunications services.
In the
United States
there are a number of companies that provide locator service.
They are called "One Call" notification services and will typically
come and mark out all utilities in the proposed work area.
They require notification, typically 48 to 72 hours depending on the
state.
Although they will
locate all known utilities in the work area, they generally do not
provide depth information. It is yours or your contractors
responsibility to expose (pot hole) every utility that intersects
the path your fence project will take to determine the exact
location. Remember, pot holing is the only reliable method for
determining where the existing utility is located.
Call your local
utility for the service provider in your area. The caller will be
asked to provide the following information:

Name of county and
township or municipality

Section number

Street address
-
Type of work
-
Name of caller
-
Title of caller
-
Start date and time
-
Best time to call back
-
Contractor
-
Contractor's address
and phone number
Once this information
is provided, the caller will be given a job number. This number is
proof that "One Call" was notified and it should be retained for
future reference in the event that a problem arises.
The uniform color code
for the spray paint markings they use to indicate underground
utility lines is as follows:
